Caron Guerrant Rand has created artwork under her birth name of Karen Ferguson, and her former married name of Karen Easter. Rand legally changed her name in honor of three gifted women: The late Ruth Caron survivor of Auschwitz who was sterilized by Mengele, and was as a second mother to Rand and played the violin before the war; Rand’s maternal grandmother Florelle Guerrant who played the piano on the radio and died of TB at 35; and Rand’s paternal grandmother Roberta Rand who hauled her piano out to a Merced farm for love and created the area’s first library in the basement of a church. All three women were never able to fully realize their artistic potential, but Rand embraces their artistic spirits and their love of life, which was immeasurable, and seeks to emulate their creative and passionate joie de vie in her own artwork.
